The diabetic diet is not one of those weight loss fad diets that only allow you to eat certain foods in small quantities. This specific diet can actually be used by anyone who wants to lose weight in a healthy way.

This type of diet is designed to help the diabetic person maintain proper control over levels of blood sugar. It is important for diabetics to keep an eye on the amount of carbohydrates they eat every day because carbs have the largest impact on blood sugar levels. This article explains more about this works with the diabetic diet.

If you are diabetic then regular monitoring of what you eat will become more important than ever. You need to be careful about the foods you eat at every meal. But although this sounds tedious it’s really not that difficult to do, and for most people it is just a case of forming new habits.

One useful tip is to have lots of colors on your plate. That basically means your choices are diverse and contain vegetables, meats and fruits. You can even get individual food recommendations that are right for you from a licensed dietitian.

For a long time it was assumed that as a diabetic you should eliminate sugar completely from your diet. Now, you may be allowed some sugar in your diet, though you certainly have to restrict it. The fact is sugar doesn’t really have an effect on the blood sugar that’s any different from ordinary starches that most people eat every day. That’s why any type of carbohydrate can cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. It’s also why you have to limit the amount of sugar (or carbohydrates) that you eat, but that doesn’t mean you have to avoid it completely. Your doctor, of course, can give you more specific recommendations.

The TLC diet is something that you may have heard of, or your doctor may have told you about, as many diabetics follow it. The main focus of this diet is to reduce your intake of foods that can raise your cholesterol. While you’re watching your diet, of course, you should also be making other changes that will support this lifestyle change.

By exercising consistently you can help to reduce your weight as well as your cholesterol levels and blood pressure. What you need to focus on is decreasing the LDL cholesterol which is commonly called the bad cholesterol. You should be raising your HDL cholesterol, the good or helpful type.

It’s a myth that you can’t do sports if you are diabetic. You can still remain physically active if you have diabetes. There are many professional athletes with diabetes who still perform extremely well. Your diet will play a critical role over time. Your diet is your best way to maintaining a normal and active lifestyle. Watching what you eat and regular exercise will help you manage your diabetes.

The Atkins Diet was designed to be lifestyle diet by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1970s. Dr. Atkins is proponent of Dr. Atkins is a proponent of ketogenic fat burning, which is achieved by eating fewer than 40 grams of carbohydrate each day. He also recommends the use of dietary supplements to help balance nutrition and the bodies systems.

Atkins Diet consists of 4 stages: the Induction Diet, the Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) Diet, the Pre-Maintenance Diet, and ultimately the Lifetime Maintenance Diet.

The Induction Diet strictly limits carb intake. Only 20 grams of carbs are allowed daily, but to offset this there is a generous allowance of fat & protein. The suggested source of carbs during this stage is low starch vegetables. This stage lasts 14 days and is followed by the OWL diet.

The OWL Stage is less severe and more carbs are introduced, but intake is limited to 40 grams per day. Participants stay on the OWL diet until they reach their ideal weight. Once this goal is attained, dieters transition to the pre-maintenance diet phase. Here they experiment with the addition of carbs until their individual carb tolerance level is established (the total grams of carbs they can eat without gaining weight).

When dieters understand how much carb they can consume and they maintain their ideal weight, they will enter Lifetime Maintenance. Here they will continue to avoid sugar, processed foods, white flour and hydrogenated fat/oils.
