Estimates are that more than 10 percent of people suffer from some degree of hearing loss. And many of them use a hearing aid in order to enhance their ability to hear everyday sounds that the rest of us take for granted.

A hearing aid is an electronic device incorporating a tiny microphone that amplifies sounds. They’re perfect for those who still have some level of hearing and simply need to enhance their abilities.

Modern hearing aids have many features that are suited to just about everyone. Digital hearing aids especially have lots of advantages over older technology. Here’s an overview of the available information on hearing aids to help you decide which one is best for your needs.

There are several types of hearing aids, with differing benefits and disadvantages. It’s important that you make your decision on which style and model you’ll use in consultation with an audiologist. Before purchasing one of these devices, be sure to have your hearing checked by the audiologist. There could be a medical issue underlying your hearing difficulties, including a middle ear infection, a tumor or even a simple buildup of ear wax.

One of the favorite hearing aids today is the behind the ear (BTE) model. BTE’s are small and convenient. In fact, they’re so small that most people don’t even notice them. Even people with severe hearing loss can use the BTEs. BTE offers binaural hearing aid technology, meaning that sound is received at ear level. Other alternatives include “in the ear” and “in the ear canal” styles. Each of these is best suited to certain degrees of hearing loss, and that’s why it’s so important to discuss your options with an audiologist.

You also need to give yourself an appropriate amount of time to adapt to any model of hearing aid. You’ll need to allow 30 days or more to become accustomed to a hearing aid. During this time you can evaluate its usefulness and comfort. Be aware that a hearing aid won’t entirely eliminate background noises and give you perfect hearing.

Lots of people nowadays are having some difficulties with their hearing, but many of them are hesitant to buy a hearing aid because they think they’ll look old. However, modern hearing aids are small, discreet, and hardly noticeable. And really, using one is so much better than constantly asking people to repeat themselves. With the right hearing aid, you’ll be able to enjoy yourself in a group again, making conversation so much easier.

The fact is that as our population ages, hearing aids are becoming ever more common. There are several varieties of hearing aids available. The kind of hearing aid you might need all depends on your lifestyle and the degree of hearing loss that you’re experiencing.

There are some digital hearing aids that can fit completely inside the ear canal so that they are barely visible from the outside. A lot of people like these because it’s so hard to tell that you’re wearing a hearing aid.

However, these devices are really only suitable for people with minimal hearing loss. As well, there are more limits on the features available, like volume control for example. This can be detrimental in some cases.

Another type of hearing aid is one that fits partly into the ear canal. These models combine the benefits of a volume control unit while still being largely unnoticeable. Some of these hearing aids even come with remote control devices to help with the volume issue. Because these devices have more options, they can be used by people who have mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

Most hearing aids are fitted either into the ear or just behind it. In the ear devices fill the space in the cup of the ear. Behind the ear styles have two components, one of which fits inside the ear. The volume control and battery units fit behind your ear.

The downside of these models is that they are more visible. On the bright side, they feature longer batter life. They also have more control features available for you to use to monitor your hearing.

The basic parts of a hearing aid are the microphone, the amplifier and the speaker. The device’s microphone picks up all the sounds within the immediate vicinity. The amplifier helps to increase the volume of the sound so that you are able to hear it. The speaker component relays the enhanced sound to the ear so you can hear it easily.

Another basic part is the hearing aid battery. They will need to be replaced from time to time, even in a properly working device. These batteries are not very expensive. They cost anywhere from four to seven dollars in most cases, depending on the type that is needed.

Hopefully, this information will help you make the right decision on getting the best hearing aid for your particular circumstances.

In December I bought a pair of ER 25 ear protectors. I play in a heavy metal band, which means im exposing my ears to loud music alot and im becoming a little deaf, which can be worrying at times. I’ve been wearing the foam earplugs at gigs and at band rehearsal, but they dont seem to be doing much to protect my ears.

My band had a UK tour coming up in February and I thought since I would be playing every night to buy a permenant pair and protect my hearing.

These have been working wonders. They are very easy to fit in and can be almost too comfortable that I forget im wearing them at some points, which leads me to another plus of these.

It’s almost as though the volume has hardly been turned down at all. It takes off a lot of the high end frequencies that you get from the cymbals and the high end frequencies from the guitar, bass and vocals.

After having cast of my inner ears taken they were made in six weeks. During live shows and during rehearsals my ears are protected, allowing me to have my hearing and enjoy playing and listening to the music I love. They can be made in a variety or colours and contain a cord to join the earplugs up so you dont lose them.

The clear ones without the cord can be a nightmare to find, I’m sure I’d be have lost them without the cord by now. You do have to have your ears syringed first before you go to get them done, as the wax in the ears won’t give an accurate impression of the cast.

Getting these earplugs is on of the smartest things a musician can do, as your hearing is protected, but the sound isn’t compromised. As musicians, we can’t ask for anything better.

Want to buy hearing protection or having problems with tinnitus?
