OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) and the Panic Attacks

Anxiety takes many forms and one of the most common is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is sometimes looked at as a less than serious form of anxiety. This is because people assume that it is merely quirky behavior and not worth worrying about.

However, OCD is definitely a serious condition and those that may suffer from it should definitely take is serious. This is even truer when OCD is combined with the onset of a panic attack.

Are you asking what OCD is? OCD is made up of reoccurring and intrusive thoughts. The person suffering from OCD is driven to do some kind of ritual to quit thinking these thoughts. These rituals can take many forms and can include reading, cleaning, or exercising done in excessive ways.

These rituals can be quite a serious influence on the person’s life. They can start being the person’s whole day in some cases. They can alter an individual’s ability to perform normally on their job or at social functions.

What is this impact? Essentially, the rituals begin to take over large parts of the person’s life. This means they can interfere with the individual’s ability to work or socialize. After all, if someone commits three hours out of the day to excessive exercise, the person is not really leaving much time to do much of anything else. As a result, it becomes necessary to look for ways to deal with the condition.

Because OCD has irrational qualities to it, it is often experienced with panic attacks also. The person can have a panic attack, if they aren’t able to do their ritual when they need to. When the ritual needs to be performed to chase away the intrusive thinking patterns, a panic attack could ensue if the ritual is not performed.

Trying to deal with even a single anxiety disorder would be complex by itself. But having to handle two disorders at the same time would be worse. But the good news is that methods are out there to handle the situation. Usually, when the OCD problems are brought under control, the panic attacks lessen too. In addition, the person doesn’t always need some kind of drug treatment to handle the situation.

One popular method of treating OCD is using behavioral modification sessions. These sessions work at limiting the reaction that a person has to the so-called triggers, which often make panic attacks to happen and to the rituals being performed. These reactions are from the relationship with an anxiety disorder.

These sessions hold a good track record for being effective. So whoever is afflicted with these disorders, that therapy is out there that will lessen the effects that this condition puts them through. The success is dependent upon how severe the disorder is, and which treatment is prescribed. This is why each person’s case has to be diagnosed therapy individually.

Both OCD and panic attacks are most definitely serious conditions. Luckily, there is successful treatment available for them. So if you are suffering today, with these conditions, be comforted in the knowledge that the right treatment can be found to give you relief.
